An Open Letter to Senator John McCain of Arizona

Dear Senator McCain:

I join with thousands of other Americans in urging you to run with John Kerry on the Democratic ticket. It has been widely written that you don’t want to be Vice-President, but it is my firm belief that with Senator Kerry needs your assistance to balance the ticket and to help in governing the country once you're elected.

Please don't let "loyalty" to the Republican Party prevent you from responding to this urgent call from your country. Many of us have wondered why you have not already become an Independent as did Senator Jeffers of Vermont. Willingness to run and to serve with Senator Kerry would be honoring a much higher calling, in my opinion, than that of party affiliation.

Such an action would be especially appropriate since you come from different regions and parties. You share the same basic values, and where you differ, you compliment each other.

George Bush has taken us down a very dangerous path, not just in Iraq but in the crumbling of civil liberties, disregard for the environment, abandonment of the less fortunate, blurring of the distinction of church and state, violation of treaties and disruption of historic alliances with other nations. Another four years of this administration would be devastating for our country and for the world.

I believe you would agree that a Kerry-McCain ticket stands the best chance of defeating Bush. This objective must have the highest priority for all of us during this election year.

Please don't let us down; we're counting on you to help re-defeat George Bush.

Revrickm

Since this article was published, John McCain appears to have positively ruled out the possibility of being a vice-presidential candidate with Democrat John Kerry. Therefore, I will be suggesting that Mr. Kerry give top consideration to the nomination of John Edwards to be his running mate for Vice President. I believe Edwards would contribute important vitality, energy, and assistance on policy development to Mr. Kerry's campaign and administration. Edwards voices a hopefulness, optimism, and populist appeal that our country urgently needs at this time. He's also voiced his support for what is probably the greatest and most basic need our democracy faces today: the honoring of the principles of equality and justice on which the United States was founded. This must be recovered if our nation is to survive. And in order for this to proceed, the present failed and corrupt administration must be resoundingly defeated and turned out of office. IMHO, Revrickm
