Bush's Class Warfare

by Phillip Freeman

President Bush has declared a continuing war on the middle and lower income citizens in the United States!

The evidence is overwhelming. This "rich man's"? president has consistently made tax cuts for the wealthiest in our country a central part of his agenda. And, conversely, he announces aid programs for the poor in our country cannot expect to get even a cost of living increase.

In his last round of welfare budget cuts, some $66 billion, perhaps 200,000 to 300,000 people will be chopped from Federal aid. The programs include cuts to MedicAid, Head Start, even funding for TB control and programs that keep the poor from becoming destitute.

And this $66 billion will not reduce the national deficit because Bush's last tax cut saved the very rich some $66 billion! Too much? No, he wants to make it permanent, extend it and says so.

So what can citizens do? To defeat this continuing attack on America's core values, the Republican majority in the House of Representatives and Senate must be removed or reduced in the next election.

If the 2006 election assures Bush of a majority in both Houses again, he will make these and other class warfare programs permanent. When it comes to a voice vote, most Republicans either agree with the Bush rhetoric or are afraid to disagree.

The latest zinger for the disadvantaged is Bush's program to rebuild the Gulf Coast areas devastated by hurricanes. His bill, ramrodded through his Republican dominated Congress, sets aside the Federally mandated requirement for “prevailing wageâ€? on such projects!

It's up to citizens. If you don't approve of the way your country is being run, call or e-mail your Senators and Representatives and demand they do better -- or you won't vote for them! And tell a friend in other electoral areas, too.
