[+] Don't take NO for an answer. Assault weapons ban must be reinstated!

by Revrickm

The national ban on military-style assault weapons expired on Monday, September 13th, because President Bush and Congress failed to act. President Bush promised to renew the ban, but instead he let it expire -- he refused to call on Congress to deliver it for his signature before the deadline. In the last televised news report on Friday, September 10, when Bush was asked if he had done anything to help get Congress to acc on the matter, he simply turned around and walked away. He is counting on people not to notice (or not to care) that he broke his promise -- and that he didn't even try to come up with a plausible excuse when asked about it!

For 10 years the assault weapons ban kept many of the deadliest weapons off of our streets, cutting their use in crimes by 66 percent. But beginning Tuesday the 14th, an 18-year-old was once again able to buy an AK-47 assault rifle in most states.

We can stop this if we continue to let Congress know of our concerns -- especially if we elect a new President and representatives who will respond to the will of the people instead of the wishes of the National Rifle Association. President Bush and Congress can still renew the assault weapons ban if they want to. Write and tell them it may be the only hope they have of being re-elected. Please join me in the continued demand for sanity in our national gun laws, at:

Thank you.

Here are my comments sent (through MoveOn.org) to the President and members of Congress:

It is almost beyond belief that President Bush and majority members of congress have chosen to engage in such a transparent and public-be-damned kowtow to the NRA gun lobby and its supporters in the midst of a close presidential election campaign.

Not since the teapot dome scandal has an administration been so cozy with private donors and corporate power interests -- providing billions of dollars of largess to Halliburton and other well-connected contractors while people of this nation suffer severe economic turndowns and epidemic levels of unemployment.

The last thing we need is a new supply of assault weapons (truly 'weapons of mass destruction') creating havoc and terror for residents in crime-ridden, economically destitute neighborhoods of our major cities!

We've got to assist law-enforcement officers in keeping deadly assault weapons off our streets. The national assault weapons ban must be renewed immediately.

Sincerely,

Revrickm

(If you don't remember studying about the Teapot Dome scandal in American history class, look it up on Google. It was also about oil, deception, and shameless corruption, just like the current administration mess.)

I have sent the above personal message to Bush and to Congressional leaders, and I am urging the MoveOn organization to continue its campaign to save (reinstate) the assault weapons ban. Please write your own brief comments and send them to MoveOn if you agree we should NOT accept the expiration of the assault weapons ban. It remains vitally important to let the President and legislators know we support such a ban and demand protection against increased criminal use of new assault weapons in our city and suburban neighborhoods.

Your letter can be simple:

Dear President Bush, Senators, and Representatives:

(Your personal note)

We've got to continue to work to keep deadly assault weapons off our streets. A national assault weapons ban must be reinstated immediately.

In 2000, President Bush campaigned on a promise to renew the ban on deadly assault weapons. But now he's let the ban expire in Congress, effectively blocking its renewal in order to gain the endorsement of the extremist gun lobby. It's wrong to put weapons of mass murder back on our streets, especially when fears of terrorism are heightened.

The national assault weapons ban must be reinstated immediately.

Sincerely,

(Your name and address)

Take time to send it today, and let's keep up the pressure on Congress. Why should we accept no for an answer on such a terribly important matter?

Thank you!
